Are we seeing the end of the “Great Resignation” with more employees staying put after the Covid exodus? The numbers suggest change is in the air, writes Aoibhinn McBride
Worker retention is steadying: Have we entered “The Big Stay”?
While the “Great Resignation” isn’t over just yet, it seems to be stalling as more employees stay put.
That’s according to Professor Anthony Klotz at University College of London, who coined the phrase back in 2021 to describe the huge volume of people quitting their jobs due to the pandemic.
This is down to a number of factors. For starters, flexible working arrangements, including hybrid work that facilitates working from home, have become the norm and in the UK.
In fact, 34% of Brits spend four days or more in the workplace compared to 50% of worldwide workers and separate data from RingCentral found that 60% of UK workers would rather opt for an extra three years of work to secure a remote or hybrid working model over working in an office full-time for the rest of their careers.
But flexibility is only one piece of the retention puzzle, and fostering employee engagement via building connection is another vital element in battling attrition,
Employees who feel satisfied in their jobs, committed to the organisation they work for, and feel like the values of a company align with their own are more likely to stay and would even be prepared to do the same job for less money.
That being said, following the recent spate of tech layoffs, job security is undoubtedly another element that is influencing tech workers in particular to hang on to the jobs they’ve got. And while talent used to rule the hiring game, increasingly tighter budgets and the very real likelihood of automation replacing workers in certain roles has put many workers on high alert.
However, if you feel like your current role isn’t ticking the right boxes, you’ve become disengaged or you’re outgrown your position and there’s no room for progression within the company you work for, it could be time to look for a new opportunity.
