The Co-operative Group is migrating its food, funeral, insurance, and legal services firm to the cloud to support business growth and reduce its carbon footprint.

The British consumer cooperative, better known as Co-op, is adopting the strategy with Indian-based consultancy Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

TCS, who has also operated with other UK retailers such as M&S and Asda, has worked with Co-op for over 14 years.

The migration to the cloud will create a foundation for future digital capabilities, promote sustainability, and reduce energy usage, according to TCS.

Recent research indicates that two-thirds of IT leaders believe their organisation’s legacy infrastructure is causing a “huge sustainability nightmare”.

Experts advise transitioning to a modern hybrid cloud platform to address this challenge.

“We are delighted to extend our strategic partnership with TCS,” said Rob Elsey, CDIO at The Co-operative Group. “They have been a great partner, aligned with our growth priorities and future-proofed our infrastructure as we set on the course for continued future expansion.”

TCS will rely on its expertise in context, deep domain knowledge, and technological capabilities to assist Co-op in fulfilling its cloud-first approach.

This will lead to a robust digital infrastructure that can support their business growth, according to Shekar Krishnan, Head of Retail & CPG for the UK & Europe at TCS.

British supermarket Asda, previously owned by US-based supermarket giant Walmart, partnered with TCS to modernise its tech stack by replacing legacy systems with cloud technology.

By automating its IT operations, TCS introduced products such as ‘Asda toyou’, an end-to-end parcel delivery and return solution, as well as the ‘Asda Scan & Go’ app, for the ability to scan in-store on mobile phones.

According to TCS, the implementation of the Scan & Go app has improved customer experience by allowing Asda to provide hyper-personalised assistance through e-receipts, in-app payments, and tailored shopping lists.
