The UK’s Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra) has announced a continued effort to migrate to the cloud with IT infrastructure firm Kyndryl.

Defra provides digital services to areas such as the UK’s trade, flood protection, and disease prevention.

However, according to Kyndryl, it had legacy systems and outdated technology.

Now, with an extension of the partnership of over one year, Kyndryl aims to continue modernising IT systems, managing networks, and supporting core cloud network infrastructure to host and run Defra’s services.

As part of the partnership, the IT firm will also be supporting Defra’s Animal and Plant Health Agency to modernise its Animal Disease Testing Service application (ADTS).

ADTS allows farmers to send sample submissions to labs, and digital technology comes in to track their delivery, automate label printing, and provide access to test details and results.

Over the past year, the IT firm has helped Defra refresh end-of-life infrastructure which it claims to have ensured continued operational resilience.

“This renewed partnership with Defra is an exciting step forward as we continue to support them in managing their core network infrastructure all while ensuring the delivery of critical services that millions of UK citizens rely on daily,” said John Chambers, president of Kyndryl United Kingdom and Ireland.

“Defra’s ambitious roadmap for a cleaner, greener and more prosperous country aligns perfectly with Kyndryl’s commitment to empowering the UK’s public sector to deliver better services and enhance people’s lives.”
