The majority of U.S. voters believe that President Donald Trump’s administration and Congress are not taking the risks of artificial intelligence seriously enough and want the government to write new regulations, according to a Reuters/Ipsos survey.
The six-day poll found that nearly 60% of registered voters, including a third of self-identified Republicans, said the Trump administration has not taken AI risks seriously enough. A little over half (54%) said the same about Congress.
62% of respondents said they believe AI could spiral out of control and threaten the future of humankind. A vast majority (84%) said they see AI as a threat to American workers.
80% of Democrats and 61% of Republicans said they support stricter government regulation of AI.
In a statement to Reuters, a White House official pointed to a new task force created by Trump, which the official said is charged with ensuring that America “continues to lead the world” in technology.
“The Trump administration’s priority is to ensure there is a booming economy so that workers have many opportunities and experience limited volatility from any short-term disruptions,” the official said.
The poll was conducted online nationwide and gathered responses from 4,506 U.S. adults, including 3,526 registered voters.
