Diversity nonprofit Colorintech has unveiled AI for Everyone, a $1million initiative to tackle inequality in the rapidly growing field of artificial intelligence.

Backed by a grant from cloud and networking firm Juniper Networks, through its philanthropy arm,  the programme aims to equip 5,000 individuals from underrepresented groups across the UK and Europe with AI skills by 2027.

The initiative also includes partnerships with tech giants such as Google DeepMind and Meta’s Llama team, as well as industry support from companies like ARM and Bloomberg.

Recent studies show underrepresented groups, including women and ethnic minorities, are disproportionately excluded from AI development and leadership roles.

Colorintech said that it plans to leverage this collaboration to expand opportunities for communities historically excluded from the benefits of technological advancements.

“This initiative comes at a crucial time,” said Dion McKenzie, co-founder of Colorintech. “As the UK strives to lead in AI innovation, there’s a real risk of leaving behind entire communities without significant investment in digital skills.”

The program builds on Colorintech’s previous successes, including a €100,000 grant from Google.org’s AI Opportunity Fund that trained 300 individuals in foundational AI skills.

Programme goals

The $1m initiative will deliver a comprehensive approach to inclusion through education, advocacy, and entrepreneurial support.

In addition to training 5,000 people by 2027, the program aims to reach 30,000 individuals through awareness campaigns that highlight AI’s potential to transform lives and careers.

The initiative also includes the creation of an advisory board comprising industry leaders and academics to ensure best practices for building an inclusive AI workforce.

Participants will benefit from mentorship and certification programs developed in collaboration with leading companies, ensuring the training meets current industry needs.

Collaboration with industry leaders

A cornerstone of the programme is its collaboration with big tech companies. Early input from Google DeepMind and Meta’s Llama team is helping shape the curriculum, while partners like ServiceNow and Bloomberg contribute resources to enhance the program’s reach and impact.

The programme’s launch comes as the UK government faces mounting pressure to address the nation’s AI skills gap.

While policymakers have highlighted the importance of upskilling the workforce for an AI-driven future, funding for these initiatives has often fallen short.

According to Colorintech, by offering tangible solutions such as certifications and grant funding for AI entrepreneurs, it is not just raising awareness but also delivering results.

The organisation will also launch a grant fund to support budding AI entrepreneurs from underrepresented backgrounds, providing them with the resources needed to innovate and succeed.
