AWS and Google Cloud have launched a jointly engineered multicloud networking solution designed to simplify private connectivity between their cloud environments. The service combines AWS Interconnect – multicloud with Google Cloud Cross-Cloud Interconnect, allowing customers to stand up private, high-bandwidth connections more quickly than traditional approaches.
In a co-authored post on the Google Cloud blog, AWS Vice President Robert Kennedy called it “a fundamental shift in multicloud connectivity,” while Google Cloud Vice President Rob Enns highlighted how it makes moving data and apps between the two clouds easier. Salesforce is cited as an early user.
The service includes an open interoperability specification hosted on GitHub, which other cloud providers could potentially adopt in the future. The preview rollout begins with Google Cloud.
The launch comes shortly after the Oct. 20 outage in AWS’s US East-1 region. Parametrix, a cyber risk analytics firm, estimated that the outage may have caused $500 million to $650 million in business losses in the U.S.
