Major US online retailers have removed several million listings for prohibited Chinese electronics following FCC enforcement action, Reuters reported.
FCC Chair Brendan Carr told reporters that the crackdown targets national security risks from companies including Huawei, Hikvision, ZTE and Dahua Technology.
Carr confirmed the delisted items include home security cameras and smartwatches either on the agency’s barred equipment list or lacking proper authorization. Retailers are implementing new processes to prevent future prohibited listings, reports say.
The chairman warned the devices could allow China to “surveil Americans, disrupt communications networks and otherwise threaten U.S. national security.” The FCC issued reminders about banned video surveillance equipment.
The agency plans an Oct. 28 vote to tighten restrictions further. Proposed rules would prohibit authorization for devices containing components from companies on the Covered List and potentially ban sales of previously authorized equipment.
The FCC is also investigating nine Chinese firms and has begun proceedings to withdraw recognition from seven Chinese government-controlled test labs.
