Google announced Dhivaru, a Trans-Indian Ocean subsea cable linking the Maldives, Christmas Island and Oman, and will establish connectivity hubs in the Maldives and Australia’s Christmas Island.
The announcement describes the hubs as facilities for cable switching, content caching and limited colocation, and are primarily focused on networking rather than AI-scale compute.
Google adds that hubs will publish automatic re-routing between multiple cables to improve resilience and will explore using demand to accelerate local renewable generation where power is constrained.
On energy and siting, Google says Christmas Island is a regional connectivity hub ideally situated to deepen internet reliability across the Indian Ocean.
“Google’s decision to invest in the Maldives is a strong signal of confidence in our country’s stable and open investment environment, and a direct contribution to my vision for a diversified, inclusive, and digitized Maldivian economy,” said President of the Republic of Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu.
Ooredoo Maldives CEO and MD, Khalid Al Hamadi, added: “This progress opens new opportunities for businesses such as tourism, enabling smarter operations, improved customer experiences and greater global reach. We are proud to be powering the next phase of the Digital Maldives.”
