Meta will build its 29th data center in El Paso, Texas, designed specifically for AI workloads. The facility will have the capacity to reach 1 gigawatt of power and is scheduled to begin operations in 2028.
The project was initially revealed in 2023 with an $800 million budget, but Meta has increased its commitment to $1.5 billion as demand for AI infrastructure has grown. Construction will require as many as 1,800 workers during its peak, and the facility will employ about 100 operations jobs once complete.
Meta said the El Paso site’s design allows it to support both traditional server technology as well as next-generation AI hardware systems. The company will use a recirculating (closed-loop) liquid-cooling system that operates without water consumption most days of the year, according to the announcement.
Meta also committed to restore twice the amount of water the facility uses to local watersheds by 2030, and to offset the electricity used by the facility with renewable and clean energy sources.
The El Paso location marks Meta’s third data center in Texas. With this project, the company reports its Texas investments now exceed $10 billion.
