The RSPCA is improving its response to animal cruelty cases with the help of new AI-powered technology designed to streamline investigations.

The animal charity has adopted “Capture,” a digital evidence-gathering platform developed by Nottingham-based tech firm Altia.

The software is now used by 330 frontline RSPCA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) officers, enhancing the speed, accuracy, and efficiency of their work.

“Capture” centralises key processes such as data collection, photo storage, and audio transcription.

By moving away from traditional methods like paper logbooks and separate digital cameras, officers can now record observations, take photos, and create case files directly on their mobile devices.

The data is automatically uploaded to a secure central platform, ensuring it is easily accessible to both field officers and HQ staff.

The system also includes GPS location tagging and timestamps, strengthening the evidentiary trail for potential court cases.

This new approach significantly reduces administrative time, allowing officers to spend more time in the field responding to urgent cases.

Last year, the RSPCA received over 907,700 calls reporting suspected animal cruelty. The growing demand has placed additional pressure on the charity’s resources, making tools like Capture helpful in supporting officers to respond effectively.

Grainne Casey, head of the RSPCA’s Special Operations Unit, highlighted the impact of the new system:

“Throughout its 200-year history, the RSPCA has led the way in animal welfare. However, with increasing demand and limited resources, it’s crucial that our officers can work efficiently. Capture has enabled us to reduce admin time and respond to more cases, ultimately helping more animals in need.”
