Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and Virgin Group founder Richard Branson join hundreds of public figures in signing an open letter calling for a ban on AI ‘superintelligence’.

The letter, which has almost 1,000 signatories including Prince Harry, Will.i.am and right-wing media figures Steve Bannon and Glenn Beck, claims advanced artificial intelligence systems developed by the firms such as Google, Meta, and OpenAI pose an existential risk to humanity’s future.

The statement was organized by non-profit AI safety group Future of Life Institute.

It states that superintelligence has “raised concerns, ranging from human economic obsolescence and disempowerment, losses of freedom, civil liberties, dignity, and control, to national security risks and even potential human extinction.”

The letter even quotes OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman as saying: “Development of superhuman machine intelligence (SMI) is probably the greatest threat to the continued existence of humanity.”
