Telstra, an Australian telecommunications company, is using an AI agent to reconcile billing and payment records as customers’ services move between systems. According to Microsoft, the Migration Payment Agent identifies discrepancies across the two platforms, recommends corrections and prepares cases for human review.
In an Oct. 27 blog post, Judson Althoff, CEO of Microsoft Commercial Business, described reconciling billing and payments across the systems as “one of the most complex aspects of customer migration.” Telstra partnered with Microsoft Frontier Company, the AI engineering business Microsoft launched in July, to deploy the agent.
Scale and reported accuracy
Althoff wrote that the agent is already supporting more than 272,000 service migrations. That is a count of service moves supported, rather than payments checked or billing mistakes corrected.
Microsoft also reports recommendation accuracy of at least 95% in production. The company did not disclose the measurement period, number of recommendations assessed or criteria used to determine accuracy.
Oversight of billing corrections
In an April article explaining its AI governance, Telstra said every AI system has a named owner, is entered in a register and is screened for its impact on stakeholders. It also documents whether direct human oversight is needed.
Higher-impact systems undergo review by Telstra’s AI Risk Oversight Council, which includes technical, legal, privacy and customer-experience specialists. Neither Telstra’s article nor Microsoft’s announcement identifies the Migration Payment Agent’s impact classification.
