Volkswagen has announced plans to integrate ChatGPT into its vehicles to offer more “enriching conversations”.

The German carmaker unveiled the plans at electronics trade fair CES in Las Vegas, saying the OpenAI platform will become a standard feature in some models of its cars from Q2 2024.

This integration will allow for “a multitude of new capabilities that go far beyond the previous voice control” it claimed. For example, its IDA voice assistant can be used to control navigation, air conditioning, and to answer general knowledge questions, as well as infotainment, by simply saying “Hello IDA” or pressing the button on the steering wheel.

VW claims that ChatGPT will offer enriching conversations, clear up questions, allow drivers to receive vehicle-specific information, and much more.

ChatGPT to provide “infotainment” for VW drivers

Mid-last year, security experts warned of risks in integrating Gen AI into cars, stating that Gen AI could be used to trick chatbots into generating sensitive information.

“Instead of asking a chatbot directly to perform a malicious action or provide unauthorised data… an attacker can manipulate the input or output of an AI chatbot to change its behaviour in order to access sensitive information,” said senior principal automotive security strategist at Synopsys Software Integrity Group, Dennis Kengo Oka.

Still, VW said it has ensured that ChatGPT does not gain access to any vehicle data, and questions and answers are deleted immediately to ensure security, as facilitated with their chatbot partner, Cerence Chat Pro.

“We are proud to build on our automotive expertise and our long-standing partnership with Volkswagen to offer its customers new innovations that leverage generative AI and large language models – even after they have purchased a vehicle,” says CEO of Cerence, Stefan Ortmanns.

“As we look to the future, together Volkswagen and Cerence will explore collaboration to design a new, large-language-model-based user experience as the foundation of Volkswagen’s next-generation in-car assistant.”

The new chatbot is offered with the following models: ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the all-new Tiguan, the all-new Passat,  and the new Golf.
