As the year of artificial intelligence comes to an end, results highlighting the top ten most used AI tools have rolled in, with ChatGPT out in front, hosting 60% of AI chatbot users.

At least that is according to Writerbuddy, which found that, in the months between September 2022 and August 2023, AI tools saw 24 billion visits.

ChatGPT unsurprisingly took the top spot in the list of most growth with 14 billion since its launch just over a year ago (1.5 billion a month) — OpenAI’s platform has become synonymous with generative AI.

Taking second place in the growth stakes is personal chatbot, Character AI. The chatbot, which allows users to create characters that they can have realistic conversations with, has received over 3.8 billion visits in total since its launch in September 2022.

The conversational AI platform, Google Bard, which launched in March in a limited amount of countries, took third place with over 240 million visits.

Then, generative AI tools in the list tend to filter into separate categories. Janitor AI — a more playful chatbot which allows not safe for work (NSFW) chat — bagged fourth place in the list, with nearly 50 million users a month and nearly 200 million in total.

Ranked fifth is AI education app Perplexity AI (134.3 million users), while AI art tools CivitAI and Leonardo AI followed in sixth and seventh (177.2 million and 101.6 million respectively). Generative voice AI tool ElevenLabs, AI video editor Capcut, and AI content creation tool Cutout.pro rounded out the top 10.

Sujan Sarkar, who authored the study, noted the launch of ChatGPT had prompted a boom in AI usage which peaked in May 2023.

Some potential explanations for the sector’s “first pullback” include stricter data privacy laws, a burnout of the initial hype, shifts in preferences back to non-AI solutions, or the release of the tools’ mobile apps which people visited over the websites for which the study couldn’t account for.

“It’s also improbable for a tech trend to rise nonstop without any pullbacks. So, while we can always seek areas of improvement and innovation, it’s unlikely the AI bubble has popped already,” Sarkar added.

The general public is still warming to the use of artificial intelligence in their daily lives. Over Christmas an AI robot will make history by being the first humanoid to speak in the BBC’s line up of Christmas Lectures, for instance.

The top countries using AI are the US, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Brazil, and the UK.

The top AI tools used by category are image generators, followed by chatbots, writing, and then video and design generators, and tend to be used for an average of 12 minutes.
