Indian electric vehicle (EV) firm Ola Electric plans to produce electric cars in India in 2024, with a range of up to 500km (310 miles).
The ride-hailing firm, which currently makes e-scooters and is backed by Japan’s Softbank Group, aims to produce 10 million electric scooters a year, one million electric cars per year, and 100 GWh cells a year.
Chief executive Bhavish Aggarwal said that the scooters, cars and batteries will all be produced at one single plant in Tamil Nadu, India, which is already being set up.
The Ola ‘Future Factory’ in Tamil Nadu is to be expanded and will be the largest EV hub in the world with a four-wheeler factory and cell plant, claims Aggarwal.
The factory will include a 100-acre lithium-ion cell plant, a 200-acre EV car plant, and a 40-acre EV scooter plant.
“We believe that India needs to become the global epicentre of the EV revolution and command 25% of the world’s automotive market,” said Aggarwal.
The electric car with the most advanced features will go from zero to 100km per hour (62 miles per hour) in four seconds, according to the announcement.
The company has sold over 70,000 electric two wheelers in the last seven months and plans to build 100 hyper charging electric stations across major cities in India.
