Shopify, an e-commerce software company, has expanded the ways shoppers can purchase products through AI assistants and across multiple merchants, adding Shop Pay integrations, a reusable shopping skill and combined checkout capabilities in its Fall ’26 release.

The announcement brings Shop Pay checkout to personal AI agents including Muse from Meta, Claude Duet and Instinct, with the latter two and Grok Bot also supporting purchases from brands outside Shopify. The release builds on shopping and checkout tools introduced earlier this year.

Shopping in the browser

On a store’s website, an assistant can use tools called WebMCP. These let it request product details or cart changes directly, rather than trying to read the page and click the right buttons. The shopper sees those changes in the same browser tab.

Shopify provides the tools on all stores using its Liquid templates and on supported sites built with its Hydrogen software. WebMCP remains a proposed web standard, and Shopify says support for agents using it is currently limited to Chromium-based browsers, such as Google Chrome.

At checkout, the assistant can update contact and delivery details and select supported saved payment options. Shopify’s instructions require the assistant to show the buyer the current order and total and obtain permission before submitting the order. Payment verification and some app-specific steps still require the shopper to take over.

Checkout WebMCP does not support business-to-business or embedded checkouts. It also excludes standard three-page checkouts unless shoppers use Shop Pay. Shoppers must complete unsupported checkouts themselves.

Shopping from an AI app

For assistants operating outside the browser, Shopify offers Shop MCP, a service connecting them to its wider product catalog and checkout. Launched Oct. 13, Shop MCP lets assistants search products, build carts and create checkouts without requiring shoppers to sign in. Signed-in shoppers can use their saved Shop Pay details, allowing the agent to complete the purchase after they confirm the order total and payment method.

The release also introduces shop.md, a reusable skill shoppers can give compatible AI agents to search Shopify’s catalog, receive recommendations based on their preferences and purchase history, check out with Shop Pay and track orders. Developers can use shop.dev to connect their own assistants to Shopify’s catalog and checkout services. Shopify says its catalog contains more than a billion products and that developers can access the same shopping infrastructure used by ChatGPT, Copilot and other AI assistants.

Shopify has also added Universal Checkout to its Shop app, allowing shoppers to buy products from multiple merchants in a single checkout. A separate Universal Checkout integration gives partners the ability to build similar experiences into their own applications, although access remains restricted to approved developers. For the developer integration, carts must use the same currency. When carts cannot be combined, shoppers can proceed through separate checkouts.

For merchants, orders placed through Shop MCP appear in Shopify’s existing order-management system. Shopify has reported growth in orders originating from AI searches but has not provided separate transaction volumes or sales figures for the newly introduced shopping tools.
